Looking for Art / Anticipation in Art, 2010
ARQVA: History of Cartagena test.
FORMER CENTRAL POST OFFICE: Looking for Art / Anticipation in Art.
In Cartagena, Tarkawian's site-specific wall drawing using black pen markers is a project which will integrate many ideas, including the art history of Cartagena and its art in the future, taking into consideration the building itself and the military past of the city. It shows us interesting contrasts between art and military history. In Murcia, his series of new drawings called Looking for Art / Anticipation in Art are an extension to this project. These drawings are about works artists have made for Manifesta editions in the past, are making for Manifesta now, or will be making for Manifesta in the future.
Mariusz Tarkawian
1983, Luków, Poland. Lives and works in Lublin (Poland). In 2009 Mariusz Tarkawian graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts at MCSU in Lublin. He usually creates series of drawings on the condition of contemporary art, e.g. Peeped Drawings, Looking for Art, In Anticipation of Art. These are hundreds of drawings in pencil on paper. For instance, the cycle Looking for Art itself contains about 2000 drawings and the work is still in progress. In addition, Tarkawian also uses walls as a canvas for his art. He is an astute observer of the world of art - both as documentalist and futurologist. It is also characteristic that he draws live in various situations. His works are often accompanied by short texts, both witty and ironic in nature. Tarkawian is presenting a project in Cartagena which documents past editions of Manifesta, combined with his vision of its prospects for the future. Since 2007 the artist has been represented by Program Gallery, Warsaw.
